You’re an entrepreneur and running your own business. Sometimes you may have one or two people who help you out in the office, but many times you are the only one to take care of every aspect of your business. At times you have to travel and leave your office – the place where you are able to get multiple tasks done and it may feel a bit overwhelming. Let’s think about your next business trip and try to figure out how to be productive and stay on top of your work while you travel.
First things first, make sure that you have a Virtual Assistant (VA) that can help you! Let your VA reschedule any meetings that you may have on your calendar, research the closest restaurants or grocery stores near where you’ll be staying, and map out the best routes so you arrive on time to your business meetings or dining reservations.
Being able to hand off these simple tasks to someone you can trust will allow you to free-up time and will let you focus on other things such as creating a To-Do list while you are en route to your travel destination. You may want to consider making an investment in high-quality, noise-cancelling headphones, enabling you to keep your focus whether you’re waiting for your flight in a crowded airport or on the airplane.
Upon arrival to your destination, unpack and get yourself organized, then take a moment to stretch your legs and go for a walk. Grab a bite to eat, call your significant other or friend; take some time to relax. The next morning, you’ll wake up feeling energized – ready to take on your day! It’s important to allow yourself some time to unwind each night – your body will thank you for it in the morning!
Make sure that you incorporate ‘me time’ at the beginning of your day. During this ‘me time’ check your email, respond to any quick messages and delegate anything that needs immediate attention to your team members back in the office (if you can). Or simply respond to the person letting them know that you are on business travel and will respond within the next 48 hours. If at all possible, try to have a brief 15 minute phone call with the person instead of corresponding via email to help pinpoint specific details without anything being lost in translation.
Honestly, what it comes down to is just being organized, avoid getting frustrated, taking a moment to breath, creating a checklist of things to do and trying to accomplish them, one at a time, each day.
