The number of people working remotely, or staying remote post-Covid, continues to grow. For those new to remote work and still trying to find their footing, check out these tips & tricks for remote workers:
Start early
Be an early bird. Sign into your company’s remote working platform or daily tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams. Make sure program or computer updates are scheduled for outside working hours.
Invest in reliable tech
Access to consistent Wi-Fi will be your first consideration. You also need to plan for tools and tech you’ll need to do your job well. For example, many remote workers invest in a great pair of noise-canceling headphones to take their work anywhere – regardless of background noise levels. Others find that wireless keyboards and mouses, or even a second screen, are integral to their efficiency.
Utilize your calendar
Online meetings are most successful when they start on time and everyone is ready to participate. Also schedule your focused work time and, when possible, schedule your lunches and break time. Doing these things answers if you are available to your team or not.
Create a separate workspace
Some can shut a door to create a mini office. Others may have a smaller space that might be hard to separate. Try a visual barrier to contain your focus, like a bookshelf or curtains to create a cozy area for yourself. Consider investing in noise canceling headphones to help you stay focused.
Communicate
Make sure your team knows when you are available, especially if you are managing projects. It’s also important to communicate your work schedule to people you live with if you are working from home.
Take time for self-care
When the line between “work” and “home” starts to blur, you might find yourself stuck to your computer screen for a longer period. Sometimes this may be unavoidable when closing a major deal or finalizing an important presentation. But you really need to create time for yourself.
Log off
Set a time to officially end the day. Working from home has its perks but taking care of your mental health is important. It’s best to make sure you have an official finishing time so you can focus on friends and family.
Set ground rules with the people in your space
Be the first one to take your job seriously. And learn to say NO to requests from others during working hours. Let them know when you’re not available to run errands for them or hang out.
Take scheduled breaks
A short break after every 25-90 minutes is a chance to give your prefrontal cortex a brief respite. This is like hitting the restart button and allows you to come back to your task with renewed energy. Breaks also offer you a chance to refocus and have a clearer view of the bigger picture, which in turn boosts your creativity and productivity.
Now that you’re working remotely, life will look slightly different (and a little more awesome). If you rely on these tips & tricks for remote workers, the transition to the freedom of a flexible work style will be smooth and successful.
